Mã Niên Horse Sculpture

A design collaboration between Bát Tràng Museum Atelier (BTMA) and artist Phan Linh, the Mã Niên (Spirit of the Horse) collection reflects on the horse as a symbol of time, memory and cultural roots.

The Mã Niên Horse Sculpture, the signature work of the collection, depicts a horse gazing at its reflection beside a stream.

Its contemporary, minimalist form is thoughtfully connected to traditional references through the water motif, inspired by the saddle details on the stone horse statues at Minh Mạng Mausoleum (19th century), together with cloud patterns commonly found in Vietnamese art, architecture and sculpture.

The cloud motif, enclosed within a saddle-shaped outline, is rendered using layered relief techniques. Combined with BTMA’s signature glazing effects, the interplay of raised and recessed surfaces creates soft, flowing forms and enhances visual depth.

The collection brings together Phan Linh’s contemporary design language and BTMA’s distinctive approach to ceramics. Through the study of traditional ceramic motifs, glazes and techniques, the atelier develops new forms and functions for contemporary living while expanding the dialogue between Bát Tràng ceramics and other materials, perspectives and artistic disciplines.
