Moon-Gazing Carp

Bát Tràng Museum Atelier (BTMA) presents a version developed from Moon-Gazing Carp, an original work by the late People’s Artisan Vũ Thắng, which received an award at the Hanoi Handicraft Product Design Competition in 2014. The original work is now part of the collection of the Bat Trang Museum of Viet Soul Art (Bát Tràng Museum).

In East Asian culture, particularly in Vietnam, the carp is a symbol of perseverance, good fortune, and success. This motif has appeared widely in traditional visual and decorative arts across different periods.

Pair of Moon-Gazing Carp is formed from two symmetrical carp-shaped volumes. Its sculptural quality is accentuated by the workshop’s signature technique of applying overlapping glaze layers, creating depth on the ceramic surface. Available in three sizes, the design can be used as a decorative object, a flower vase, or for holding small everyday items such as keys, jewellery, or lipstick.

Alongside the development of new designs, Bát Tràng Museum Atelier (BTMA) continues to produce works that carry the distinctive visual language of the late People’s Artisan Vũ Thắng, while preserving the techniques and surface treatment methods he developed throughout his career.
