Over nearly five decades of ceramic practice, the late People’s Artisan and Artist Vũ Thắng developed a distinctive visual language rooted in the clay body, glazes, and decorative motifs of Bát Tràng ceramics. Building on his formal training at Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts, he developed a technique of applying multiple overlapping glaze layers, establishing a characteristic colour palette and surface treatment within his ceramic practice.
This design was developed from an original work by the late People’s Artisan Vũ Thắng, based on the traditional Tỳ bà vase, a ceramic form inspired by the silhouette of the tỳ bà (pipa), a traditional East Asian lute. The silhouette is refined with two curved lug handles and bronze details applied to the rim, handles, and foot. The hand-engraved chrysanthemum vine motif is combined with the workshop’s signature technique of applying overlapping glaze layers.

With its simplified visual language and distinctive surface treatment, the design can be placed in a wide range of settings, from traditional architecture to contemporary interiors. Works by the late People’s Artisan Vũ Thắng are held in private collections both in Vietnam and abroad.
Alongside the development of new designs, Bát Tràng Museum Atelier (BTMA) continues to produce works that carry the distinctive visual language of the late People’s Artisan Vũ Thắng, while preserving the techniques and surface treatment methods he developed throughout his career.
