Proudly Vietnam 01: When Fashion Meets the Heritage of Bát Tràng Ceramics

On November 12, 2025, designer Mộc Nhu unveiled Proudly Vietnam 01, the first chapter in a long-term project celebrating Vietnamese culture through contemporary design. In this collection, fashion moves beyond personal expression to become a bridge—inviting audiences into the ceramic world shaped by the late People’s Artisan Vũ Đức Thắng, who devoted half a century to his craft.

The collection draws from the aesthetic foundations preserved at Bát Tràng Museum: the one-of-a-kind artworks created by the late artisan, the Memory Garden, and the outdoor art spaces he built more than twenty years ago.

From Ceramics to Fashion

The collection is rooted in the artistic legacy of the Bat Trang Museum of Viet Soul Art (Bát Tràng Museum)—from its archival artworks to the spaces shaped by the late artisan’s vision.

It also continues the creative spirit of Bát Tràng Museum Atelier (BTMA), the family-run ceramic studio where his signature techniques are preserved and developed: contemporary forms that narrate Vietnamese culture, multilayered glazes that create natural depth, and ongoing research in fine arts and craftsmanship.

Mộc Nhu distilled these elements and reinterpreted them in a contemporary fashion language.

Creating to Reimagine Tradition

Over nearly four months, 24 designs were crafted using intricate handmade techniques. The designer and his team experimented with beading, resin-based materials inspired by mosaic works, quilting, 3D embellishment, and printing on lurex and faux fur to express woven motifs.

To faithfully recreate the sculptural lines found in Bát Tràng ceramics—such as the iconic Pipa Vase—the team spent hundreds of hours on advanced fabric-carving embroidery and leather sculpting. These creative techniques form the visual cornerstone of the collection.

Beyond aesthetics, these methods honour the value of craftsmanship—the foundation of both ceramic art and Vietnamese cultural identity.

The collaboration between Mộc Nhu and Bát Tràng Museum Atelier reflects how a new generation of creatives continues the story of People’s Artisan Vũ Đức Thắng. Ceramic heritage does not remain behind glass; it becomes a living source of inspiration, reinterpreted through new materials, techniques and perspectives.

In late 2011, People’s Artisan Vũ Đức Thắng introduced the Ceramic Boots Collection, blending the silhouette of modern fashion boots with traditional Bát Tràng ceramics. Nearly 15 years later, these designs remain among his most iconic works—timeless pieces that reflect his bold, experimental spirit.
The dialogue between ceramics and fashion began with him. Today, Bát Tràng Museum Atelier continues this journey through contemporary collaborations:
– The An Nam Collection with designer Diệu Anh, transforming ceramic techniques into traditional Vietnamese accessories such as the mấn headpiece and yếm bodice.
The Ceramic Replica of AI ƠI Handbag with designer Lưu Việt Anh, reshaping a classic handbag silhouette to tell a story about Vietnamese hospitality.
– And most recently, designer Mộc Nhu with Proudly Vietnam 01, drawing inspiration from the late artisan’s original works and the atelier’s current creations.
Ceramics and fashion, though different fields, share a devotion to beauty and enduring cultural values. This artistic dialogue was initiated by the previous generation and is now carried forward by the next—creating new, inspiring narratives.
The collection’s visual concept, “From Factory to Gallery,” is inspired by the journey of a ceramic artwork—from the hands of artisans in the workshop to the space where it is exhibited and celebrated.

Bát Tràng Museum Atelier (BTMA)
BTMA is the nearly 50-year-old ceramic atelier of Bát Tràng Museum, run by members of the founding family as a way to continue the legacy of the late People’s Artisan Vũ Thắng. The atelier researches and refines elements of traditional Vietnamese ceramics—forms, glazes, and motifs—and reinterprets them through contemporary design. Alongside preserving the works that shaped the founder’s legacy, BTMA collaborates with artists across disciplines to develop new collections grounded in heritage and shaped by the creative spirit of the present.
Designer Mộc Nhu
Nguyễn Hoài Nhu (known professionally as designer Mộc Nhu) graduated as the valedictorian of the Fashion Design program at Văn Lang University with his standout collection Lộc Tứ Bình, inspired by Vietnamese ceramic art. His design practice consistently reflects a three-dimensional approach to time: Tradition – Present – Future. Rather than following trends, he pursues an introspective path, drawing from local cultural values and translating them into contemporary forms.
